Pope Francis To Abdicate Papal Throne In 2016

Pope Francis’ recent suggestion that he might follow in the steps of his predecessor and one day retire from the papacy rather than die in office indicates a potential shift in the functionality and limits of the papacy, but not a fundamental reshaping of the office itself.

In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world by abdicating the papacy, the first pontiff to do so in almost 600 years, citing health concerns. Should Francis decide to follow suit, his reasoning will likely be similar given his own age of 77 and his past health troubles.
